Resources for Families with Young Children (Six and under) Mental Illness, Eating Disorders, Dual Diagnosis, Alzheimers/Dementia SUPPORT GROUPS (Mental Illness, Eating Disorders, Dual Diagnosis, Alzheimer's/Dementia Depressive · Bi-Polar Support Alliance: A Support Group for persons with Bipolar Depression or Depression and their friends and family. The group meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 7:30 pm at Bay Arenac Behavioral Health, 201 Mulholland, Bay City - Rm #208. For questions call 687-5116 or 895-2397
Alliance for the Mentally Ill: Provides information and support to friends and family of persons who have a mental illness. The group meets the 1st Monday of each month at Bay Arenac Behavioral Health (3rd floor) in Bay City. The group does not meet in the summer. There is no cost to attend and registration is not required. Contact person is Larry Stahl at 686-6709.
Schizophrenics Anonymous: A self-help support group for persons with schizophrenia or related disorders. Provides acceptance, support and understanding, information and education, positive reinforcement, empowerment, and enhanced social skills and self-esteem. The group is free and meets on Fridays at 1:00pm at the Opportunity Center. Call 895-9080 for more information.
Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA): A 12 Step self-help program for persons coping with dual diagnosis (mental illness and substance abuse). The DRA program helps a person recover from both chemical dependency and emotional or psychiatric illness by focusing on relapse prevention and actively improving the quality of life. Through mutual support, the person learns to avoid the risks that lead back to alcohol and drug use as well as reducing the symptoms of emotional or psychiatric illness.
Safe Harbor Eating Disorders Support Group: A group for people who have an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating). Meets every Monday evening from 7:00-8:30pm at the Lincoln Center in the North or East conference room, 820 S. Lincoln (Corner of 21st and S. Lincoln in Bay City). No fee or registration. Families in Action: A nine week educational series for family and friends who are supporting a loved one with a mental illness. Contact Ellen Albrecht at 895-2300 to find out when the next series will be offered. Topics include mental health conditions, signs and symptoms, treatment methods, medication, communication, stress management, substance abuse, community resources, recovery, suicide prevention, and handling difficult situations and problems. Cost is $10 per person for the series.
This Isn’t What I Expected - Depression After Delivery: Postpartum Depression Support Group for women that are experiencing depression or other troubling emotions after birth or who are having difficulty adjusting to a new baby. The group meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 11:00am-12:00pm and the 4th Thursday of each month from 5:30-6:30pm at the Women’s Health Pavilion – Child Birth Education Classroom. Families Anonymous: A support group for relatives and friends concerned about drug and alcohol abuse or behavioral problems. Held at Bay Arenac Behavioral Health, 201 Mulholland, Bay City – 2nd floor in room 208. Call 895-5223 for more information.
Opportunity Center: A Club House Program for persons with mental illness. The program is located in Bay City and offers social and recreational programming, staff and peer support, support groups, vocational opportunities, groups and information on community resources. Recovery Inc. A support group for people experiencing depression, anxiety, fear, panic, and other nervous symptoms. Meets in the evenings at Zion Lutheran School. Call 781-2130 or 835-2977 for more information.
Standish Friends Society: A Drop-in Program for persons with mental illness. Provides support, a listening ear, peer case management, advocacy, education, and resource materials. For information, contact David or Lisa at (989) 846-0781.
Alzheimer’s/Dementia Support Group: Open to family and friends involved or interested in learning how to care for a person with memory loss. Informal meeting encourages caregivers to discuss concerns, obtain information, support one another, find comfort in others who have similar experiences, socialization, and problem solving. Group is held on Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00pm, 1001 Marsac, Bay City. Contact Stacy for more information, 892-6644.
Fibromyalgia Support Group: A support group for individuals with Fibromyalgia and their families & friends. The group is offered one Tuesday per month from 6:00-7:00pm at the Center for Rehabilitation at Bay Regional Medical Center’s West Campus. Call 667-6600 for more information.
