What
are Psychiatric Services?
Psychiatric
Services help determine whether or not there is a
need for continued psychiatric involvement or medication.
Services are provided on a one-on-one basis and include
psychiatric assessment, prescriptions, medication
monitoring, education and referrals for lab work.
Psychiatric Services may be regularly scheduled, or
they may be provided in a crisis situation.
Who
can benefit from Psychiatric Services?
Anyone
who has a mental illness, developmental disability
or severe emotional disturbance may be eligible for
psychiatric services. Psychiatric services are provided
in conjunction with case management or therapy.
How
do Psychiatric Services help an individual?
A
psychiatrist provides treatment. Each person who is
treated receives a comprehensive evaluation that takes
a close look at the problem he or she is experiencing.
This evaluation includes a history of the current
illness, as well as previous psychiatric, physical
and medication histories. There will also be an examination
of the individual's relevant personal and family history,
along with his or her personal strengths. The psychiatrist
may prescribe medications, which are monitored regularly
by both the doctor and a nurse.
